Speaker 1:Here is the myth your liver detoxes itself, so you don't need to worry about detox programs. Well, here's the truth. Your liver detoxes itself only if it has the right nutrients at the right time, and later in this episode you're going to discover exactly how you can do this in the safest way possible. Another myth is that detox means that you'll be racing to the toilet all day. Nope, I wouldn't want that for anyone, especially my high-performance health clients. The truth is that the exact opposite in most cases, meaning the digestive system is giving, is given a free pass and as far as a few days of well-needed rest. So when you hear me talk about a functional medicine detox, we're really shutting down digestion for about 66 hours actually, so a couple days and a half.
Speaker 1:So I want you to think of it this way your liver is like the oil filter in your engine. It's constantly cleaning, removing impurities so that performance stays smooth, and the difference is your liver is trying to filter about 10 pints of blood every six minutes. Most people don't realize that the liver is working that hard 24-7. While you're awake, while you're sleeping, as long as your heart is beating, it's pumping that blood. So think of your heart as your oil pump in your engine. The blood is the oil and your liver is like your filter 10 pints of blood every six minutes. Now let me ask you this Would you run a full season with the same engine, oil and filter? Of course not. You know exactly what would happen, and the same goes for your liver and your health, if it can't keep up with the load.
