As always, we are here to explore the edge of what's possible when we take radical ownership of our energy, our health and our impact. I'm your host and personal integrative health practitioner, jeffrey Mort, and fellow entrepreneur on the path of aligned living, and today we're doing something a little different. We're doing a mini masterclass on one of the most talked about topics in health world right now talking about glp-1, weight loss medications and, more importantly, how you can safely and naturally support your own body's fat burning, appetite balancing mechanisms, without becoming dependent on synthetic drugs. Because here's the truth what we're really after isn't just weight loss, it's freedom Freedom from food noise, freedom from metabolic chaos, freedom to feel good in your own skin while building your mission and living your life. So let's unpack this, shall we? So what is GLP-1 and why is everyone talking about it? Well, glp-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide 1, and it's a hormone that your body naturally produces in the gut after eating, and it does a few really cool things. So let's break this down it. Number one helps to regulate blood sugar, super, super important for overall health, not just weight loss. It also tells your brain I'm full now. You might be thinking well, I thought that was up to uh, the hormone leptin. Well, it does have something to do with that as well. And then number three it slows gastric emptying, which is super important, but not to be overdone. We're gonna, we're gonna dive deep into that one afterwards. And then it also glp-1 also supports insulin sensitivity. So super, super important for regulating blood sugar as well. So think of it as your built-in appetite and blood sugar whisperer. Now the pharmaceutical industry caught on to this and they developed GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic and Wegavy and Monjoruro and there are other ones as well which mimic this hormone and essentially turn up the volume on satiety and insulin regulation. So they were originally created for type 2 diabetics, but now they're being prescribed off label for weight loss and, yes, they do work in that area and many people are shedding pounds fast sometimes, sometimes too fast.
Speaker 1:And I will say I'm not against these medications. There is a time and a place for it. But, much like so many of the other medications on the market today, they catch on like wildfire and they are being handed out like Pez candies, unfortunately, and so I want to talk about a deeper issue here. Here's the problem. Want to talk about a deeper issue here? Here's the problem these medications, they're not magic wands. They're synthetic hormones and while they can help with short-term weight loss, they come with risks, especially if you're not also changing your lifestyle. So you know, if somebody weighs 400 pounds, 500 pounds, and they need to lose 100 pounds rapidly so that they can do some workouts, they can do some exercises, they can make some lifestyle changes, you know they can actually leave the house. That might be a time and a place for that person. But we're going to talk about the risks that come with long-term use of these GLP-1 medications.
Speaker 1:So common side effects are nausea, vomiting, fatigue, muscle loss, bone loss, constipation, gallbladder issues and so much more. Now let's talk. Talk about, let's break that down just a little bit. If you're taking a medication and you're getting nauseous or you're vomiting or you're feeling fatigue, that's your body talking to you, telling you that what you're putting into it is not acceptable. The body's not adapting, not accepting to that. Especially if there's vomiting, like that is a key sign that there there's something wrong, like the body is rejecting that fatigue. That is your mitochondria, your energy cell, your. The powerhouse is in your cells producing energy or, in this case, not producing energy. If a medication is making you exhausted and tired, then you know it's costing you your energy. Your body is using its energy to be able to uh, to combat that the muscle and bone loss. We're going to talk a little bit about that in just a minute.
Speaker 1:And so, what's more? Many users regain weight after stopping the drug because they haven't fixed the underlying issues, things like blood sugar dysregulation, systemic inflammation, poor sleep, mineral imbalances. And here's something that nobody's saying loudly enough GLP-1 drugs can suppress muscle mass. So if you're not doing strength training or consuming enough protein, it's going to suppress muscle mass. They can also affect your thyroid, your adrenals and your gut if not monitored properly and you know most of these are not that they're prescribed and they're not monitored monitored properly and then they don't work long, long term. These, these medications are not a sustainable weight loss program. If your nervous system and detox pathways are clogged, you're going to have some issues sooner than later on these GLP-1 medications. So unless you're tackling the root causes, it becomes another cycle of symptom management, palliating the symptoms and not true healing. So maybe you know someone who can relate to this common scenario, because this is what we see in practice so often, and this illustrates what often happens with GLP-1 agonist medications like Ozempic and Wegavie, and Monjaro and others, when used without a supportive plan. So I'll change the name here Lisa.
Speaker 1:She's a 47-year-old entrepreneur juggling her own business, her teenage kids. Year old entrepreneur juggling her own business, her teenage kids, and she's trying to reclaim her energy after years of putting herself last. So, after struggling to lose weight for what felt like forever, her doctor prescribes a glp-1 medication and at first it feels like a miracle. Her appetite plummets, the scale drops fast, she's feeling happier, she's feeling lighter and within five months she's down nearly 30 percent of her body weight. Like that is absolutely amazing. But here's what nobody warned her about. Much of the weight loss isn't just fat. She's also losing lean muscle. She's also losing bone density, which affects her metabolism and long-term health.
Speaker 1:Now, on top of that, her digestion slows to absolute crawl. She starts experiencing severe constipation. We're talking days without a bowel movement, sometimes almost a week, feeling bloated and nauseous. And that's because the stool is actually backing up and causing toxicity in the body and that's because the stool is actually backing up and causing toxicity in the body. And that's because GLP-1 medications delay gastric emptying and for many people that leads to gut motility issues. That means slowing bowel movements and then, as I alluded to that, toxin buildup and even bacterial overgrowth. Now you know, our stool that we excrete is mostly bacteria that needs to leave the body and so when that is backed up inside the intestines, that is leaching toxins back into the body.
Speaker 1:And then she starts feeling worse, not better. She starts feeling sluggish, she's more moody than before, she's got brain fog and super uncomfortable once again in her body. So she stops the medications. Now here's where other problems start. Within a few months all of the weight comes back, but this time it's not lean tissue, it's all fat. She didn't gain the muscle back, she didn't gain the bone loss back. Her metabolism, already downregulated from the muscle loss, just can't keep up. And now Lisa is not just back where she started, she's worse off because her muscle mass is lower, her metabolism is lower, her digestion is still off and her frustration now is higher than ever.
Speaker 1:Now the story isn't rare, it's common. We see it in practice so often. Over the last, I would say 18 months to to two uh, two years probably. And it's exactly why we believe in a better integrative approach, one that supports natural glp-1 activation, one that protects your muscle, protects, protects your metabolism, protects your hormones, and one that helps you build sustainable habits, not dependency, like what is the long-term plan for those GLP-1 medications? To be on them forever, because when you get off of them, you're like I said, you're so much worse off. So you want the next chapter of lisa's story to be a comeback and not a crash. Well, we should probably have a conversation. So I want to give you some good news here. There's a new path a natural glp1 activation.

We need to set it up with the right environment, and here's a few ways to naturally support GLP-1 activation in the body. We want protein and fiber rich meals. These, meaning proteins and fibers, fibrous foods stimulate GLP-1 and keep you fuller for longer.
Speaker 1:Now intermittent fasting is another key component. So this is doing less better. Intermittent fasting helps to regulate insulin and supports appetite hormones. Speaker 1:Next, polyphenols and nutrients. These are found in plants like berberine, curcumin, green tea. So we're looking at EGCG, also ginger, all known to enhance GLP-1. Next, strength training and cold exposure. So strength training here's where a lot of people go wrong is, you know they're hoping to get on a medication where they just need to pop a pill and not do anything differently. And you know, for those people maybe that GLP-1 medication is the right move for a certain duration, but nine times out of ten if they're not moving their body, if they're not building that muscle back, they are not, they're not on a sustainable plan. I'll just leave it at that. So strength training actually naturally supports GLP-1 activation, as does cold exposure. We want to support mitochondrial health and that GLP-1 signaling.
Speaker 1:And then here's one of the foundational pieces of any health plan is sleep and stress management. Why? Because cortisol imbalance blunts GLP-1 and blood sugar regulation Huge, huge part of that. So that goes back to the de-stress protocol that you know we learned as integrative health practitioners at the IHPI Institute or the IHP Institute of diet, exercise, stress reduction, toxin removal, rest, emotional balance, science-backed supplementation. Exercise, stress reduction, toxin removal, rest, emotional balance, science-backed supplementation and success mindset. It all ties in. But two of those components are stress reduction and sleep or rest Huge, huge part of overall well-being to be able to balance that cortisol so that we're not blunting GLP-1 and disrupting blood sugar regulation.
