I'm grateful you're here. Yes, always grateful for you joining me here today. Welcome, and I'm so excited to start bringing you guests and topics on health benefits here in episode 101, and today is no exception we're going to be talking about the health benefits of hemp-derived CBD, so cannabidiol CBD has a complex history marked by controversy and evolving perceptions.

Jeffrey Mort:

Initially, cbd was overshadowed by THC, the psychoactive compound in cannabis, and was even banned alongside marijuana in the 1970s even banned alongside marijuana in the 1970s. However, in the 2000s, cbd's potential therapeutic benefits began to gain recognition, leading to a surge in research and popularity. Despite its growing acceptance, cbd still remains controversial due to misconceptions and concerns about regulation, quality control and potential interactions with pharmaceuticals. Moreover, its efficacy for various health claims, such as pain relief, anxiety reduction and seizure control, has been debated. While some studies suggest promising results, others raise questions about methodological flaws and inconsistent dosing. As the CBD industry continues to expand, calls for stricter regulation and more rigorous scientific investigation have intensified, aiming to clarify CBD's true potential and ensure consumer safety. Despite the countless research studies proving efficacy, the real world results often speak for themselves, and I was going to go into a little bit of history on CBD and THC and cannabis in general and how that became illegal back in 1937, but I'm going to save that for a different episode.

Jeffrey Mort:

I want to get right into today's guest topic and discussion and I also want to talk a little bit about some of the products that we're going to be discussing today and why I'm bringing this to you. You know there's a certain litmus test that products have to pass for me to be able to recommend these to clients, bring them into my private wellness practice and talk about them here on the Breaking Boundaries podcast. And for this particular product topic, you know I want to make sure things are organic, they're clean, they're third-party tested, they have no artificial additives, clean extraction processes, as well as being effective, having efficacy, and then, of course, things like variety and flavor. And you know, even right down to the packaging and some of the things that Miriam's Hemp offers definitely pass the litmus test. I had a chance to try out some of these products for quite a duration and they you know they definitely passed the test.

Jeffrey Mort:

So I want to bring the conversation to you about some of the other programs that miriam's hemp offers. As far as their calls with nurses and other heart-centered programs for qualified individuals such as seniors and veterans make sure you stay to the end for all the links, how to connect with Diana and for the discount code that she graciously offered for the Breaking Boundaries and Love Energy Wellness community. So, without any further ado, here's my conversation with Diana Pena of Merriam's Helm. Well, diana, welcome to the program. I'm grateful for you joining us on the Breaking Boundaries podcast today.

Diana Peña:

Thank you. Thank you so much for having me.

Jeffrey Mort:

Yeah, you're welcome. Let's dive right in. Tell us how you got started and who is Miriam, because the company name is Miriam's Hemp and you are Diana, so why don't you lead us into that and explain?

Diana Peña:

So in 2013, my mom, miriam, was diagnosed with a brain tumor. When we received her diagnosis, it was sudden. We had really no idea what you know where, you know where this came from, just all of a sudden. So it was very abrupt diagnosis and really from the beginning it was a very dire diagnosis. Not only was it a glioblastoma, which is a very aggressive form of brain cancer, but it was also in a location of her brain that could not be operated on, and so her prognosis was very poor. Usually, if people are able to have it removed, they tend to be able to live a little bit longer, because, although in some cases and most of the time it does grow back, it gives people more time. But in my mom's case that was not the situation. It wasn't removable. So they basically said from the very beginning you know, your mom has three to six months to live. If chemo does work for her, you know maybe a year and a half. So can you just imagine getting that type of diagnosis One day your parent is fine, the next they're not. My mom actually always believed in plant medicine. She actually had an herbalist doctor in California that she would go see for different things, like my mom had fibroids cured using plants, and so I knew that my mom was very big on this because she had a specific doctor that she would go see for this and this was an actual MD doctor that had like a clinic and everything somewhere in LA that basically just worked with a lot of different types of naturopathic things. And so I knew that this that looking into the naturopathic remedies for my mom was something that, like, I immediately jumped into. But I actually came across cannabis because I was researching clinical trials for brain cancer and 11 years ago there really wasn't anything for her particular type of brain cancer and I happened to come across a study that was done in Spain where they injected rats that had a glioblastoma with straight THC. They saw that the THC was killing the tumor. So I said, okay, this is, there's something here. It's the same type of brain cancer that my mom does. Yes, it's being done on rats, but it's it's, it's promising, right, if they're doing a study on this, there must be something that they're seeing that this plant can potentially kill cancer.

Diana Peña:

What happened was I went into Facebook. I found it was a very small group at the time, a cannabis oil success story group, only a few hundred people at the time and there was already people in there using cannabis oil for different types of cancer. Keep in mind, this was way before even CBD was popular. I went in there and people I said this is what my mom has. People started messaging me like I got sent this video. Here's how you make the oil. Make this for your mom, start giving it to her. So that's how I started with using the plant for my mom. And so at the time it was a high THC that I was giving my mom. A lot of people know now is like the Rick Simpson oil, but we call it full extract THC oil is what I was giving my mom at the time. And so with that, I started to become really active in this group and also in a few brain tumor groups on Facebook and my own social media, my own Facebook. I wasn't very active on Instagram at that time. I feel at that time Facebook was more popular. I feel I was starting to get a lot of people messaging me asking me where did you find this oil? How can you make it for me? I have cancer, I have brain cancer, I, you know I want to. You know, try this and so, as time went on, my mom, you know, started chemo and radiation doing really well and so I think because people saw that she was doing so well, they knew that there was something I was doing for her, especially because of her prognosis. With that, over time it just became where it was. I was getting tons of people asking can you sell me this oil?

Diana Peña:

And back then in California, even though medical marijuana was legal, you could only get it with a doctor's prescription and also through a medical, what used to be called a medical marijuana collective. I at the time, my partner, who was my, my boyfriend at the time I said, look, I think there's something here. I think that, like you know what I'm doing for my mom, we can help other people. So I approached him with the idea of like what if we kind of turned this into a way that we can sell this to people legally? So I researched it a little bit. I knew I started kind of getting a little bit more familiar about the marijuana laws were in California. So I went, we went to a lawyer, gave us the pros and cons, we decided to go through with it and so we actually started as a medical marijuana collective in California. Initially it used to be called Miriam's Hope. So a lot of times when people, when you Google our name, you'll see Miriam's Hope pop up a lot. And then we did a lot of interviews. There's interviews and articles on our company that come up as Miriam's Hope, and so that's how we started.

Diana Peña:

About a year later is when the whole Sanjay Gupta thing came out, where he did the interview with Paige Figge, who's the mom of Charlotte, who's a little girl that had epilepsy. And it was then we, so we were already giving my mom CBD. We were already because we had found CBD from some a different source that used to a different company that used to carry it. About a year later we were already doing this. My mom was still alive.

Diana Peña:

Once the CBD thing kind of came about, we really kind of it really kind of blew up for us because what happened was is we were working with a doctor at the time who was referring us her patients, to get this oil from us, but we didn't have CBD. But she had about a 600 person waiting list for people that were looking for CBD for their kids with epilepsy. So she approached us and she said you know, if you guys are able to start carrying CBD, I can start sending these people to you, and so that's how we started with making the CBD products. The tinctures was because of the need that there was. At the time there wasn't really any other companies carrying CBD, and so we started doing that.

Diana Peña:

We started first off with just the regular basic CBD product. As time went on, there was a need for other cannabinoids, and that's kind of where you see that our menu has. There's not just CBD, there's a ton of other products that we carry as well. So that's kind of like the short version of how we got started and where we're at now. The short version of how we got started and where we're at now, and just really quick. So once the laws changed in California, we weren't able to keep selling the high THC products, but our CBD qualified as hemp because of the low THC in it, and so what we did is we switched everything over to just hemp. We unfortunately had to get rid of, like the high THC products that we carried, and so now we're only a hemp company. But that's basically how we got started. Uh, years, 11 years ago.

Jeffrey Mort:

Sure, and you said, you know, back before, CBD was popular, and not just popular, but available and accessible, because correct me if I'm wrong, but it was anything before 2018 was like if you were going to go into that business. You're pretty much building your business out of a house of cards because you were susceptible to being shut down in a heartbeat because of uh, you know the the difference in where, where we were then, compared to where we are now.

Diana Peña:

Absolutely, because you're you say 2018, cause that's when the farm bill was signed, which is, yeah, you're absolutely correct. And it's kind of crazy to think that, like I said, when we started carrying the CBD tinctures, like maybe about a year into us, having the marijuana collective just to find growers that were growing CBD high CBD plants, was unbelievable, almost impossible. I mean, I tell you that we put ourselves into some very risky situations driving up north to Garberville, going up into Murder Mountain is what they call it. If you've seen that Netflix documentary, we didn't know this at the time, but we used to drive up there and we because there was was a grower literally the only grower that we could find that had high cbd flour, because we used to extract ourselves. That was the only way. The only source that we had at the time was this grower up in garberville, um, and that's where garberville is. Where were they? Were that documentary that's on Netflix that they call Murder Mountain. That's where we used to go. So I mean, we've we've been through some pretty, pretty crazy situations just trying to source CBD. So to think of, like, how accessible it is now compared to what we had to go through to even just get it, get the flower to make it for these. You know, these people that were on waiting list was pretty crazy. And you know, now, when we go, when we look back and think about it, we're like we had no idea how dangerous it was to go up there, because you go up there and it's beautiful, it's very quiet, it's beautiful, but so, yeah, so we we've been through some pretty crazy, crazy experiences.

Diana Peña:

You know getting you know from the beginning to now. You know things are so different, but, yes, you're absolutely right, the laws were so different. And then, really, what happened in 2018? When the laws changed, then everybody was able to grow. Then, for a couple of years, there was an oversaturation of CBD in the market. You know, a lot of new companies coming in. And then I think what happened was when COVID hit, it kind of kicked a lot of these new companies out. Luckily, we survived it. You know we had already been in this for a few years. We have a huge returning customer base which kind of helped keep us afloat during COVID. It's definitely been such a volatile market. You know that we've kind of been able to navigate these last few years.

Jeffrey Mort:

Yeah, it sounds like you know. I'll have to say that your commitment to helping other people is just extraordinarily remarkable. Also, that I see that your mission for being fulfilled is protected by a higher power to be able to come through all of that, through adversity, and still be one of the top not just one of the top CBD companies in the United States. But let's talk about quality for a minute Because, like you said, 2018, 2019, you could buy CBD in every corner gas station across the United States, but was that going to have health benefits or health risks? So talk about some of the you know potential hazards of lesser quality CBD products.

Diana Peña:

Yeah, that was a really frustrating time. I honestly feel now that that's kind of not as much the case, but there is still a lot of. You know, we actually just dealt with this whole Delta eight situation in California. I don't know if you you probably got some of the emails that we sent out. They they were about to pass a bill in California where it was going to basically ban all CBD products because of this Delta eight product that is synthetically made. But because it's made from CBD but it's made synthetically Um and it's a product that's not really safe. It's not regulated Um and it gets people high. They've had a lot of incidents, um, emergency room incidents of people like, I guess, overdosing or taking this Delta 8. And people like it because it gets you high. It's not a product that, like our most of our customer base would use. We would not sell it because it is synthetically made. Yes, even still now there's still people and companies will find a way to make products that people are, you know, like Delta 8, that are not really safe because they're synthetically made. They're made with different, with chemicals that are not safe.

Diana Peña:

Back then I would say that you know some of the biggest things where people were just not testing their products so they were getting because of the fact that when the when the farm bill was signed, there was an influx of CBD flour available. I mean, just to give you an idea, back in the days when we were buying flour, let's just say, because it was so scarce, cbd flour was very scarce. Back in the days we would pay, let's just say, like $1,500 a pound for CBD flour, which is it's expensive. Right, when the market blew up and everyone was growing it, you could buy a pound of CBD flour for like $200. Like that's how cheap it was getting where we're just like wow, this is so crazy Like the way, like how the influx of all these people growing CBD now is affecting the market but it's also allowing for all these people to come in that just want to make a quick buck, because it's like it was like a major gold rush that they started making less than products that you know they were not really testing.

Diana Peña:

There was a lot of products that you know if the label said it was 25 milligrams and you'd get it tested, it wasn't correct, so it wasn't. It wasn't just that. Like, what are they using to make the products? Is it, you know? Is it? Is the oil base organic? Is it clean, you know? Are they testing it? Whoever's making it? Do they really know what they're doing when it comes to formulation? And so there were so many different aspects of these companies that were coming out and, honestly, crappy, shitty products I'm sorry, I don't mean to cuss, but yeah, just kind of subpar products, and a lot of them they were not.

Diana Peña:

This was another thing that we were seeing a lot. There's a whole process when you extract oil. There's added steps that you can go through where you can make it really clean, take out most of the chlorophyll and leave a really kind of better tasting product. We would see these companies with these like really dark oil, so they weren't purifying the oil. The taste was really bad. I mean, it tasted just like a root, like a plant. Not that our products taste all of them taste amazing because, I'm not going to lie, some of them don't taste that great Because at the end of the day, it's still a plant, right, so there's nothing we can do to really change that. But in the process that we use, we clean up the oil as much as we can where it doesn't taste terrible, and so that was the other thing too.

Diana Peña:

It wasn't just the quality. It was the quality, but it was also, you know, the fact that some of these people were not really going through all the steps that we go through to really ensure accuracy when it comes to the formulation, but also keeping the plant as full spectrum as possible, meaning like all the other cannabinoids, all the terpenes, all the flavonoids, everything in there but still putting out a product that was accurate, clean and safe and most and also organic. Yeah, I mean, you were seeing this a ton and you're right Between 2018 to, honestly, even a little bit after COVID, but it's really died down quite a bit. I think that there was such an influx in this market that these little new companies didn't survive because they don't. They didn't have the customer base, because of the type of customer base that we have to be honest with you. That's what's kept us afloat, and just the fact that we've been doing this for so long.

Jeffrey Mort:

Yeah, that's amazing, and some of the points that you made are my practice at Love Energy Wellness. I have unbreakable standards and some of those are. You know Love Energy Wellness. I have unbreakable standards and some of those are quality products. I'm not going to recommend anything that doesn't pass the litmus test of being quality, being third-party tested, having efficacy, with research-backed science behind it. So one of the reasons why I'm bringing you to the Breaking Boundaries podcast is because of some of those points there that you made. So let's talk about some of your products, because most CBD companies just offer like a CBD product and if a person would go to merriamshempcom and they would see the product line that you have there, it can sometimes be overwhelming. And one thing that I love, one of the things I should say that I love about your website is it has education behind there to help navigate somebody through the different products that you have. So you know you don't only have CBD, but you have CBA, cbn. Why don't we talk a little bit about the different variants?

Diana Peña:

Yeah, and you're right, it can be very confusing. When we first started kind of venturing out to other cannabinoids, that was actually one of the first things that we discussed is how are we going to keep coming out with all these different cannabinoids and not make it confusing for people? And that can be hard and which is why we do focus a lot on the education. And we focus a lot more on education because of the fact that in our industry we're very limited to what we can say advertise, market more than any other industry. To be honest with you, we are so red taped. It's very frustrating. More than alcohol, more than cigarettes, more than anything that you can think of. We are so regulated and so we can't really make medical claims right. So you'll never go to our website and see anywhere on there that our CBN is for sleep right, because we can't really make medical claims right. So you'll never go to our website and see anywhere on there that our CBN is for sleep right, because we can't say that, even though that's mainly what most people use it for. So we've done a few different things to kind of help alleviate that situation. Part of it is a lot of the education that we post. We use that and a lot of the education that we post is based on current medical studies that are done on different cannabinoids. We take the medical study and if we're able to kind of break it down because sometimes these medical studies are the language is for someone who's gone to medical school Like I'll read them and sometimes I don't understand them Sometimes I do. Luckily there's one of the doctors that we work with, dr Goldstein. I'll send her the study. I'm like can you break this down for me? Because I know it says that it looks like CBG can work for this type of cancer. But I'm not sure exactly what they're saying. But can you? So we do, you know she'll do that for me and so then we have we put it, we will, we'll kind of break it down and we'll use that to kind of cite whatever education we put out there. So we do try to base a lot of the education on these different cannabinoids based on studies that we find or that gets sent to us.

Diana Peña:

And we've also provide the nurse hotline, which is really awesome. I love having that. I for years with the couple, one of the nurses that actually helped kind of create that business. I kept bugging her like you need to set up some kind of consultation, because it's very frustrating for us because people do come to us and we have all these different products but we don't really know where to start them. So that's kind of what the nurse consultation does help people with, is you meet with them and you kind of you go over your medical history and because they've worked with so many people over the years, based on their experience with the different products, they'll be able to tell you okay, for your arthritis pain, this is what I see working the best. Most of my patients use this. Start here and then we'll kind of see how that works With these products.

Diana Peña:

It's not a one size fits all, so and that's the reason why it can be very confusing. For example, let's just say that you and I have a very similar, similar ailment. We're about the same age, we're kind of like, very similar physically in a lot of ways. Just because it works good for me, it doesn't mean it's going to work well for you, and that's where the whole knowledge on the endocannabinoid system comes in right. It could be because we might be taking the same dose, but I'm seeing a result, a better result than you are. That all has to do because my physiology, even though we might have the same ailment, is going to be different than yours. I might have a more of an endocannabinoid deficiency than you do, so that's why CBD might work better for me than it did for you. There's a lot of different factors that take into account why it works for some people, why it doesn't work for others. The reason the different cannabinoids work in different ways is because of the endocannabinoid system, the different receptors that bind and don't bind to certain cannabinoids. Because of that, you'll find, some people will find, for, like I'll give you an example CBD can work for anxiety for a lot of people for the most part, but for some people it doesn't.

Diana Peña:

For some people it can, actually depending on how much they take. If they take too little or too much, it can make them more excitable, it can make their anxiety worse. So, but CBG is actually kind of one of our go-to products for anxiety. Cbg seems to work really well for a lot of people with anxiety and so when CBD doesn't work, they can always try CBG. It can be confusing and that's why we, like I said, we have the nurses to help, because they can at least guide you and get you started. Aside from the nurses, I have a list of doctors that I've compiled that actually do paid consultations. These doctors and nurses do charge for their consultations, but the consultations are much more in depth and they do kind of offer you follow-up. Some of them are a little bit more specialized as well.

Jeffrey Mort:

So the nurse program, the nurse consults that you offer through your website and through your business, those are complimentary.

Diana Peña:

Yes, that's amazing.

Jeffrey Mort:

That sets Miriam's Hemp far beyond the other efforts of some of the other companies that are out there especially for the clients that are just not sure where to start.

Diana Peña:

Yeah, thank you, it's pretty cool. Yeah, we offer a free 30-minute consultation. That's why it's very basic. That's why I said I have a list of doctors and nurses that I've compiled that also do consultations, but they offer longer, more in-depth, but of course, those people do have to pay for those. So, yeah, so we have that available and that's really helpful for a lot of people to navigate the confusion of like oh my God, there's, they have like 15 skews, like I have no idea, what do I choose?

Jeffrey Mort:

Yeah, that's amazing, and so tell me a little bit about you. Have another program. Sometimes high quality CBD is just not in reach for some people, so tell me a little bit about the compassion program that you've developed.

Diana Peña:

So the compassion program is really awesome. I advise people anytime, if they qualify for any of those, to apply it. Basically, we have a discount for senior, veteran, disability, low income and basically the all, all of them, except the senior offer everybody between a 50, a 30 and a 50% discount on all of our products. The ones that are at 30% are usually the other cannabinoids, like CBDV, cbn, those other cannabinoids. Just because for us as a company they're a little bit more expensive to source, the discount is a little bit lower, but it's still a pretty good discount. It's 30%. All the other anything that's just straight CBD gets 50% discount.

Diana Peña:

It's really easy to apply. People just come to our website. They submit whatever is required for which discount they're applying. I usually I process the applications and it's usually done right away and then, once I approve it, the discount is automatically put onto their account. Because you have to create an account. I add the discount to their account and then when they log in they don't even have to call or anything. They don't. There's no coupon code, nothing like that. They just automatically place their order and when they check out it'll give them that discount.

Jeffrey Mort:

That's wonderful and you know, speaking of discounts for the people that don't fall in one of those four categories, you've also graciously hooked us up, our community up, with a discount code, love-energy, and that gets them a discount as well. So I appreciate you offering that for our community.

Diana Peña:

Yes, and there are people there is there. There are people that don't qualify for any of those, you know. You have people that are not over the age of 55, and you know, but they don't qualify for disability or their income's too high. So, yes, they're definitely always good to have that Quite. A large amount of our customer base takes advantage of that program.

Jeffrey Mort:

Wonderful, and so if people want to learn more about the products that you sell or follow you on social media, so it's merriamshempcom, is that correct?

Diana Peña:

Yeah, merriamshempcom.

Jeffrey Mort:

And that's spelled M-Y.

Diana Peña:

M-Y. Yeah, it's M-Y-R-I-A-M-S-H-E-M-Pcom.

Jeffrey Mort:

Wonderful. And then where can they find you on social media?

Diana Peña:

So our Facebook is pretty much the same. You just, if you're on Facebook, you just search Miriam's Hemp, it should come up. I think our handle is just Miriam's Hemp Instagram. It is Miriam's underscore hemp.

Jeffrey Mort:

Wonderful. Yeah, I'll link up all those in the show notes if anybody wants to check that out and follow along, and, of course, I'll also link up the website with our discount code for the community and I'll link up your programs as well. Awesome, thank you. Yeah, you're welcome. So I appreciate you coming on the Breaking Boundaries for Entrepreneurs podcast. It was wonderful learning more about high quality hemp products and how they can help entrepreneurs with their health ailments, with their energy, with their focus, with their sleep and all the things that you can't say on social media. We're held to the same censorship as well in integrative health. Oh that's true.

Diana Peña:

Yeah, I didn't think about that. Yeah, censorship as well and integrative health oh, that's true. Yeah, I didn't think about that, yeah.

Jeffrey Mort:

You know we deal a lot with, you know, naturopathic medicine and herbalism and functional medicine and anything that contradicts big tech, big pharma or any of the like. Then we get shut down and censored on most of our platforms, but that's why I love podcasting and having you know a unique platform like this to have these open conversations, where you know we may not be able to post everything from this conversation on, say you know, instagram reel. However, people can access this podcast and learn more about the wonderful products that you have to offer the world.

Diana Peña:

Thank you so much. I really, really appreciate you taking the time to bring me on and anyone wants to ask questions. We have a chat on our website that's pretty active. If someone doesn't want to call, they can just jump on that chat on our website and that's always available as well.

Jeffrey Mort:

Well, thank you, diana, for being on the program today. Thank you, have a good day. Well, there you have it. I hope that you enjoyed my conversation with diana penya from merriam's hemp. And remember, as always, that this podcast does not claim to provide any medical advice or claim to diagnose, treat or cure any disease, but we do provide you the highest quality of information and science-backed protocols that can help you to get healthy and stay healthy.

Jeffrey Mort:
